How do you set up a photo studio for eBay and Amazon? What do you do if you don’t have enough money to set one up?
The following is what I bought, links below are to similar photo studio items.
Tracy takes us on a tour of her photo studio area and shows us how we can make one in our own homes for a super reasonable price.
First we get to take a look at the lighting kit that she has. It consists of 2 tall lights with the umbrellas to diffuse the light and to adjust the lights in any direction. Then there is also a short light that is used in the front of the item that you are taking the picture of. Using the umbrella’s creates a soft light without creating any shadows.
Next, Tracy shows us the photo studio that consists of a metal frame to hold the drapes (back-drops) and then there are 2 fabric drapes. One of the drapes is black and one is white. Tracy said that she has used both of them when she shoots pictures of the items that she is selling. She uses whichever drape will give the most amount of contrast to the item. But she did mention that she likes the white one better.
If you are taking a picture of a pale pink vase, you might not want to use the white drape because it would not allow the color to be seen as well as if it was in a dark, contrasting drape.
A dark item, obviously would look best if it was sitting in front of a light colored drape. That is when it would be best to select the white drape.
This entire kit comes in a carrying case so that you can pack it up and take it with you if you would have to take it out of your home and to another location.
The next thing that Tracy has in her photo studio is 2 parts of a desk that she took the top off of. Basically, you will just need some sort of hard surface like a table, desk, night stands, etc. You can use your imagination here and find something around your house to use.
She also has a small stool that she found at a garage sale to use to prop the item up that is going to be photographed. Tracy demonstrates how she tucks it under the drape she used to cover the desk and by placing the stool under the drape, it really allows for various angles to be taken of the item.
Tracy demonstrates with a green ribbed, glass bowl. With the bowl on the stool, it really allows the light to bounce off the ribbed sides and lets the buyer see the details that the bowl has.
She paid 25 cents for the chair but it really makes a huge difference in the pictures that she is able to take, because of it. Look around your house and see what you have handy, that you can use to give some dimension to your studio.
In this photo studio, Tracy paid $50 for the light kit, and $50 for the photo studio, which was the drapes and the framing system, and the stool was 25 cents and her work surface was no charge, since she already had it.
Next, Tracy shows us what her photo studio looked like with her mannequin in it. She mentions this is how she takes pics of the clothes that she sells. Also, she suggests that you might want to just leave the light kit with the umbrella’s in the shot because it makes it look like a real model photo shoot.
Using the mannequin makes the clothes look better than if you just laid a jacket on the table to take the picture. Also, it makes it look much more professional so people would tend to pay more for clothing that is displayed like that vs. just laying on a table.
Tracy also shows us how she could make a photo studio out of a window area. She could use the sill as the place for the item to sit and use the drape as her back-drop. A simple floor lamp was the light that she used to show the details better.
Next, she shows us how to totally improvise and make a photo studio with no money at all. Tracy uses a white sheet and covers a chair and tucks in it to make a smooth surface. The window gives the light that is needed and she puts a book on it to show how that simple photo studio, creates a professional picture, for zero money.
When Tracy first started, she bought 2, $12 lamps from Wal-Mart and used that as her light kit. You can use 2 cardboard boxes as your work surface, if you don’t have anything else to use.
The important thing is that you create a designated area to use as your photo studio.
Hope this was helpful to you!
We will see you again soon!
