Just a few tips to help with juggling being a parent AND having a business…
Tips for juggling kids and picking inventory for eBay and Amazon
Tracy has had a lot of questions regarding how she does it with having 8 kids and she home schools.
#1 Tip is to multitask. Do other tasks such as clean the bathroom while kids are bathing in the tub. Do as many things as you can during the times the kids are occupied and focused on other things. While having lunch at home, Tracy pulls out from the freezer of what will be for dinner and puts it into the crockpot. That way dinner will be ready when it’s time for it. Tracy had a baseball game to go to with the kids so she thought about what stores or tasks she should do while on the way to the baseball game. There were a few stores she needed to go to so that saved time, gas and mileage by combining the trip to get multiple things done on the same trip.
#2 Shopping with kids. Have consistent rules & rewards for good behavior. Utilize the shopping cart, put the kids in the cart. Set the rules before going into the store. Entrepreneur Girl Tracy gives the kids 3 rules before going into the store. 1) Stay in the cart. 2) Be quiet, you can talk amongst each other but not to mommy while shopping and 3) We are only going to get 1 treat while in the store, don’t ask to buy multiple things.
The key is to stay consistent with the rules for each shopping trip. When they do a good job and follow the rules then they get the treat, if they misbehave then they don’t get the reward.
Tracy also brings M&M’s for treats at other stores, get Happy Meals and bring shopping.
#3 Be quick with your shopping trip. Know what you are going into the store for. Tracy is mindful of the kids short attention span, so don’t spend hours in the store scanning items.
#4 Put the kids to work. Give them a task while shopping, for example Tracy gives one kid a bucket to put the items they are buying into.
#5 Potty first thing when you get to a store. Get the potty trip out of the way so you won’t be in the middle of shopping then suddenly hear the kid saying “I have to go potty!!!”
#6 Schedule, have a schedule of most important items. Have everything broken down throughout the day of what has to get done. Set up reminders on your phone to keep you on schedule and to start new tasks. It’s good to do it that way so you won’t spend too much time on one task and not getting another one accomplished.
#7 Schedule help for important times… Don’t try to do it all yourself. Have baby sitters available for the times you can’t take your kids or to be able to get some tasks done. Tracy at this point is lucky to have teenagers at home to be able to watch the younger kids. There are times you need to have the peace and quiet to be able to focus on things that you can’t afford to be disrupted. It allows you to be focused and think straight. Tracy needed the alone time from the kids so she can prepare the shipments for eBay and Amazon.
#8 Work hard and play hard. The kids know when you are trying to get work done while its time with them; for example, if you have your computer on your lap while watching a movie with the kids or you are reading a book in one hand while pushing a kid on a swing with the other. The kids know you are not paying full attention to them. Tracy’s tip is for you to have work time and play time. Work hard during your work time and play harder during play time. When the kids know it’s your work time then they will respect it since you had play time with them.
